Code BA25111201: Presentation Silver Compass by Barker & Son, Hallmarked London 1911
| This is a rare presentation compass made by Francis Barker & Son (London) in 1911. It is engraved on the front lid:
Presented by The Ashdown Naval Brigade to H. A. Warby for services rendered June 1919 to Feb 1921 The case is made of sterling silver and has silver hallmarks for London, 1911. It is also hallmarked with maker's logo: F. B. & Sn (Francis Barker & Son). It has a very low serial number 16. The case is in excellent condition without dings or dents. When the push button under the bow is pushed, the front lid springs open as it should. The compass has a Barker dial which is a variant of the Singer's patent. It is marked ENGLAND REG. 416645. The British National Archives (South-West London) gave the following information: "The design no. 416645 was published on page 1318 of the Official Journal of patents dated 30th September 1903, covering designs registered in the week ending 17th September 1903. The owners were Francis Barker & Son, of 12 Clerkenwell Rd, London WC" (text from the Compass Museum). The dial is in excellent condition and retains all its original paintings. It is covered with a flat glass crystal in excellent condition and free of chips or scratches. The red cross under the crystal is still intact as well. The compass has a quality bar needle with a jewelled brass cap. It points North withou any problem. The transit lock is activated when the lid is closed to prevent any damage to the pivot and jewelled bearing when the compass is not in use. The needle is released automatically when the lid is open by pushing the button under the bow. This a rare compass by a quality maker. It measures around 37 mm in diameter. |
