Code BA24121701: Victorian Sterling Silver Leather-Cased Compass by J. H. Steward, London Hallmarks 1890
| This is a rare silver compass made by the famous J. H. Steward in 1890. The compass has a sterling silver case in excellent condition without dings or dents. It has silver hallmarks for London 1890. It has also makers hallmark B & S. The bow is also made of sterling silver and stamped with a Lion Passant. The Singer's Patent mother-of-pearl dial is a real beauty. It is clearly signed: J. H. STEWARD, 457 WEST STRAND LONDON. The dial is covered with a nice bevelled glass in excellent condition without any chips or scratches. The dial is also in excellent condition without any damage. The compass is very precise and points North without any problem. It has a transit lock that is activated by pushing the button under the bow. To release the dial the button must be pulled out. THe transit lock protects the jewelled bearing and pivot when the compass is not in use. The compass comes in its orginal leather case that is still in excellent condition. It has a strong hinge and sprung button to open the lid. The leather case has green velvet inside. The compass measures around 34 mm in diameter and the leather case has a diameter of 43 mm. This is a rare example by a quality maker that would make a great gift. |
