Code BA24091101: Sterling Silver Victorian Hunter Compass, Hallmarked London 1871
This is a rare victorian full hunter compass that comes in a sterling silver case fully hallmarked for London 1871. The are several hallmarks on the case: The Pendant is hallmarked with a Lion Passant and the letter q. Inside the front lid it is hallmarked with the maker's initials J.S (Joseph Sharpe), a Lion Passant and the letter q. It has a serial number: 8. The case is engine turned and is in excellent condition. It has a strong hinge. It has an empty shield at the centre of each side, ready to be engraved. The dial is made of white porcelain and still in mint condition without any damage. The quality bar needle has a jewelled brass cap and finds North precisely. When the lid is closed a transit lock freezes the needle to avoid undue wear to the pivot. The dial is covered with a glass crystal free of chips or scratches. The diameter of the case is about 46 mm excluding the pendant and the ring. This compass has a very unusual design, since the lid does not have a spring but still it has a transit lock that is activated automatically when the lid is closed. The bezel of the case can be opened to remove the compass insert as on a pocket watch case, which is also very unusual. This compass would make a great gift. |
