Code BA24061744: Antique French Sundial Compass, c. 1900
| This is a rare French sundial compass made around 1900. It comes in a hunter case is made of plated brass and still in excellent condition without any damage. Inside the lid it is engraved with serial number: 89. The inner dial is made of made of brass with French cardinal points. It is engraved with inscription: MADE IN FRANCE. The dial is graduated every 2 degrees and numbered every 20 degrees (0 to 360 at North). It is covered with a thick glass crystal in excellent condition. The compass can be used with a folding gnomon bar to read the solar time. It has also a little bird to read the graduation on the gnomon. The compass is precise and points North without any problem. The needle can be blocked by acting on the transit lock on the side of the compass to prevent wear to the pivot when the compass is not in use. The needle is blue and silver in colour. Diameter of the case is approximately 52mm. |
