The Boreal Arrow

Code BA23091301: Brass Singer's Patent MOP Compass by Cary London, c. 1862

This is a nice compass made around 1862. It has a painted mother-of-pearl dial in excellent condition. It is clearly marked SINGER'S PATENT 1807. This patent ran between 1861 and 1868. Based on the number 1807, it is fait to date this compass to 1862. The dial is also marked with the maker's name CARY, LONDON. The mother-of-pearl is really nice and has very nice colours when exposed to light. The case is made of brass and has a brass lid that fits snugly on top the compass card as it should. It is in excellent condition without dings or dents. When the lid is closed, a small pin is pushed down to activate the locking mechanism to prevent accidentally damaging the bearing when the compass is not used. It has a glass crystal free of chips or scratches. The rotating dial swings freely and finds North easily. The case measures around 45mm in diameter.
