The Boreal Arrow

Code BA23012501: Early 1900 Wooden French Sundial and Compass

This a nice French sundial compass dating from around 1900. It is housed in a mahogany case still in excellent condition with strong hinges with only normal signs of use. The two hooks work fine to secure the lid when closed. The gnomon is made of brass with a small bird (in white metal) that can be used as a pointer to the numerals engraved on the gnomon. It must be unfolded to read the solar time on the circular ring in the center of the glass crystal that covers the compass. The silvered dial has French cardinal points and a raised chapter, graduated every 2 degrees and numbered every 20 degrees. The glass crystal and gnomon are in excellent condition without any damage. The compass has a quality needle with a jewelled brass cap. It has silver and blue colours and points North precisely. There is a transit lock that comes into operation when the lid is closed. The size of this collectible is 72 mm square by 23 mm deep. This is rare and quality instrument for the serious collector.
