Code BA22072801: Georgian Silver Long-Neck Leather-Cased Pocket Compass, Hallmarked London 1806
This is a Georgian leather-cased compass made in England in 1806. It is called a long-neck compass. The compass case is in excellent condition. It is solid silver at bears English Silver Hallmarks for London 1806.The dial is made of porcelain and is in excellent condition without any chips or hairlines. It has a 32-wind compass rose, typically used in the early 1800s. This kind of compass is highly precise and several examples were used by the military for this reason. The wooden Moroccan leather covered case is in excellent condition with strong hinge and functional hook to securely close the case. The compass has a quality jewelled brass cap with a bar needle. It is in excellent working order and finding North very easily. Under the long neck there is a small lever acting as a transit lock, lifting the brass disc located under pivot to avoid any contact with the pin. The compass still has its original slightly convex glass crystal, which is in excellent condition without any scratches or chips. The diameter of the compass is 45mm. The diameter of the leather case is 56mm. This is to be considered as an extremely rare Georgian Long-Neck compass and has great value for the serious collector. |
