Code BA22042301: Victorian Sterling Silver Barker & Son Compass, London Hallmarks 1898
| This is a extremely rare silver compass made by Francis Barker & Son in 1898. The compass comes in a sterling silver case with silver hallmarks for London and year 1898. It is also hallmarked with maker's mark F. B. & Sn. The case is virtually in mint condition without dings, dents or scratches. The ring has also a Lion Passant Hallmark. The mother-of-pearl SINGER's Patent dial is a real beauty and easily reflects nice and rich colours as soon as it exposed to light. It has a jewelled metal cap and rotates freely and finds North precisely and easily. The dial can be locked by pushing the silver button located under the ring. It must be pulled to release the dial again. This transit lock mechanism protects and prevents undue wear to the pivot, and preserves the precision of the compass over the years. The compass is covered by its original thick flat bevelled glass crystal in excellent condition. The compass measures around 42mm in diameter excluding the pendant and the ring and is 16mm thick. This is a rare example by a quality maker that is very difficult to find especially in such a condition. |
