Code BA22020101: Antique English Compass by R & J BECK, London, c. 1860

This is a rare compass made by the famous R & J BECK firm around 1860. The compass comes in a gilt metal case in nice condition for it age: dings or dents, retaining most of its gilt with some expected spots on the back. The silvered metal dial is hand-engraved with a nice compass rose. It has a raised chapter ring graduated every 2 degrees and numbered every 10 degrees. It is covered with a beveled glass crystal free of chips or scratches. Signed on dial R & J BECK, LONDON & PHILADELPHIA. The compass has a quality bar needle with jewelled brass cap and points North precisely and easily. It has a transit lock that can be activated by pushing the stem located under the loop. You have to pull the stem again to release the needle. It measures about 50 mm in diameter. This is a beautiful and rare compass that would make a nice addition to any compass collector.
