This is a WW1 officers pocket antique compass, made by Short & Mason LTD, London. It was made in 1916. The case is made by the Dennison Watch Case Co. and marked Short & Mason LTD., LONDON, 1916, V, 109853 with the military arrow /|\. Inside the lid engraved 60317 and the letter M. The case is Nickel and in excellent condition as can be seen in the pictures. The beveled glass crystal covers the distinctive Singers patent style dial card and both are in flawless condition. It is in full working order and finding North easily. When the lid is closed it activate the transit lock, which protects the pivot when the compass is not in use. The compass measures about 4.7cm in diameter.

The case maker was Aaron Lufkin Dennison of Birmingham UK, he manufactured watch cases from late 1874 at 24 Villa Road, Handsworth UK. As part of the war effort he diversified into compass cases. He was originally the Managing Director of the American Waltham Watch Company in the USA, where he made the very first watch with interchangeable parts and produced watches of Railway quality. He was known as the Founding Father of the American Watch Making Industry.
