The Boreal Arrow

Code BA16121501: Leather Cased Compass by Negretti & Zambra, c. 1897

This is a nice and rare pocket compass made by the famous English instrument maker Negretti & Zambra of London. I would place its manufacture around 1890. It comes in a leather/wood case in excellent condition with strong hinge and a push button to secure the lid closed. The lid opens and closes as it should and the button is firmly fixed to the lid. The compass itself is housed in a nickelled and chromed brass case in excellent condition. No dings or dents. It is engraved on the back: A. ELLIOT, CAVERTON, 1897. The compass has a nice mother-of-pearl floating dial. It is a variation of the Singers Patent with a jewelled brass cap. The dial is in excellent condition and has nice detailed design. It is clearly signed Negretti & Zambra, LONDON. The compass is covered with a flat glass crystal free of chips or scratches. The compass is very precise and finds North without any problem. The bezel must be turned anti-clockwise to release the dial. When it is turned clockwise, it will freeze the dial to prevent undue wear to the pivot when the compass is not in use. The compass has approximately 54mm in diameter. It comes in its original leather case lined inside with green velvet and stamped NEGRETTI & ZAMBRA, LONDON, , HOLBORN VIADUCT, 45 CORNHILL 122 REGENT ST & CRYSTAL PALACE. The leather case is in excellent condition and has approximately 62mm in diameter. Very nice and quality compass that would a great gift.
