Code BA15063001: Rare Dennison Compass with Silver Hallmarks 1936
| This is an unusual and rare compass made by Aaron Lufkin Dennison in 1936. The case is made of sterling silver and has several silver hallmarks. The bow is stamped with a Lion Passant. The pendant is stamped with letter M (1936) and Lion Passant on one side and with maker's initials A. L. D. on the other side. Inside the front lid it is stamped with maker's initials A. L. D. and usual Dennison markings found on pocket watch cases: DENNISON WATCH CASE CO. LTD., a Lion Passant, an Anchor (Birmingham) and the letter M. It also has a serial number 652092. The case is in excellent condition with no damage, dents or dings. It has a strong hinge and the lid springs open to a right angle when the release button is pushed. It has a tight bow. Bevelled glass crystal is in excellent condition. The compass has a nice quality jewelled needle. The dial is silver and in excellent condition. In full working order and finding North precisely. The transit lock is in working order when lid is closed. It measures 47mm in diameter excluding the pendant and ring. This is a high quality and rare compass. |

The case maker was Aaron Lufkin Dennison of Birmingham UK, he manufactured watch cases from late 1874 at 24 Villa Road, Handsworth UK. As part of the war effort he diversified into compass cases. He was originally the Managing Director of the American Waltham Watch Company in the USA, where he made the very first watch with interchangeable parts and produced watches of Railway quality. He was known as the Founding Father of the American Watch Making Industry.
