The Boreal Arrow

Code BA15062801: 19th Century Netsuke Compass and Sundial

This is a rare copper netsuke with portable compass and sundial (hidokei) that dates back to the 19th century. The case is made of copper and is still in excellent condition for its age. It has a strong hinge and a sprung button that must be pushed to open the case. The lid clicks when closed without any problem. The case is engraved with foliage and has a suspension loop on one side of the case. The compass dial is silvered and engraved with Japanese cardinal points. The compass is covered by glass crystal still in excellent condition without scratches or chips. It has a needle with a brass cap that points North without any problem. The sundial has really nice design with a half sphere curvature and a gnomon and is engraved with what seems to be zodiacal characters. It measures 3.5 x 3.5 cm.
