The Boreal Arrow

Code BA15060501: Antique Compendium by KUHN of LUZERN Retailed by J. H. Steward, c. 1900

This is a rare Swiss compendium made by F. Kuhn Optician in Luzern and retailed by J. H. Steward, London. These instruments were favored amongst travelers, explorers and balloonists during their journeys. This set contains two instruments: a compass and a barometer. I would place its manufacture date around 1900. It comes in an rectangular leather case that is still in excellent condition with a working push button and strong hinges. The lid closes firmly as it should. The blue velvet inside the leather case is virtually in mint condition, which is very uncommon for an instrument of this age. The lid of the case is stamped with the retailer's logo: J. H. Steward, 406 Strand, London. The case measures approximately 157mm x 107mm x 38.5mm (6.18 inches x 4.21 inches x 1.51 inches).

The compass

The compass has a gilt metal case in excellent condition without dings or dents. It has some spots to the gilt but they do not distract from its beauty. It has a quality Mother-Of-Pearl Singer's Patent dial with a jewelled brass cap. The dial is locked automatically when the front lid is closed. The dial is covered with a glass crystal in excellent condition without scratches or chips. When the button is pushed, the lid springs open to a right angle as it should. It has a strong hinge. The compass is in full working order and points North easily and precisely. It measures approximately 51.4mm (2 inches) in diameter.

The barometer

The barometer comes also in a gilt metal case still in excellent condition without dings or dents. It has a rotating bezel for the use of the altimeter function. The bezel can be rotated in either directions by turning the crown. when the crown is pushed, the font lid springs open to a right angle as it should. It has a strong hinge. The dial is numbered in inches of mercury (from 21 to 31) and in feet (from 0 to 10000). It is marked Improved Scale, Compensated and gives indication to weather changes (RAIN, CHANGE, FAIR). It is clearly signed F. KUHN, LUZERN. The dial is in excellent condition. The barometer is in full working order and has been tested with an air bag. It measures approximately 51.5mm (2 inches) in diameter.

This is a nice quality pocket combination set that would make a nice gift.
