Code BA150321742: Hunter Compass by Barker & Son for A. HAUSTETTER, NEW YORK, c. 1900
This is a vintage pocket compass made by Barker & Son around 1900 for A. HAUSTETTER, NEW YORK (engraved inside the lid). It has a pocket watch like case made of brass and was oxidized to give it a dark grey colour. Still in excellent condition without dings or dents and has gained nice patina over the years. It has a crown that must be pushed in order to open the lid. It has a strong hinge. Marked on dial MADE IN ENGLAND, REG. No. 416645. The floating dial is a variant of the Singers patent.The British National Archives (South-West London) gave the following information: "The design no. 416645 was published on page 1318 of the Official Journal of patents dated 30th September 1903, covering designs registered in the week ending 17th September 1903. The owners were Francis Barker & Son, of 12 Clerkenwell Rd, London WC" (text from the Compass Museum). Has a transit lock when lid is closed. Points North precisely. The glass crystal is in excellent condition and has the red cross underneath. It is quite large with 50mm in diameter and very thin with only 10mm thickness. |
