Code BA150228732: Leather-Cased Compass by GILBERT & Co., London, c. 1850
This a rare and nice leather cased English compass dating back to circa 1850. It was made by GILBERT & Co. in LONDON. It has a gilt case still in excellent condition without dings or dents. The design of the case, pendant and ring was typically used on pocket watches of that era. It has a nice porcelain dial clearly signed by maker's name. It has a quality bar needle with brass jeweled cap. The dial is covered by a slightly domed glass crystal in flawless condition. The compass is in excellent working order and finds North easily and precisely. The compass is fitted in a red leather case still in good condition after all these years. The hook is present, the hinge is strong and the lid closes and opens as it should. The compass measures 52mm in diameter excluding the pendant and ring. The leather outer case measures 64mm in diameter. Very nice and quality compass. |
