The Boreal Arrow

Code BA140918642: Brass Sundial by P. ORR & Sons, MADRAS c. 1860

This is an unusual English sundial and compass dating from 1860. It is housed in a cylindrical domed brass lidded case still in excellent condition without dings or dents and has gained a nice dark patina over the years. The dial is marked P. ORR & Sons, MADRAS and has a bras gnomon. Inside the lid you will find an equation of time that will help read the solar time by the sundial for each month of the year. The dial is covered with a high domed glass, free of scratches or chips. The compass finds North without any problem. On the side of the case there is a lever that is used to lock the dial in place when the compass/sundial is not in use. On the bottom of the case it is engraved MADE IN ENGLAND. The instrument measures 48mm in diameter and is 30mm high.
