The Boreal Arrow

Code BA140805611: Wooden English Sundial and Compass by W. Watkins of Bristol, c. 1820

This an extremely rare sundial compass dating from around 1820. It is housed in a mahogany case still in excellent condition with a strong hinges. No damage. The case opens and closes as it should. Inside the lid, there is a brass gnomon fixed above a detailed dial that allows reading solar time. The gnomon is brass and must be unfolded to read the solar time on the dial. The dial is singed W. Watkins, Bristol. The compass is covered with a flat glass crystal. It has a flat blue needle with a brass cap. The dial has a typically nautical design with a nice compass rose. It is signed W. Watkins, Bristol around the centre. It points North with precision and there is a transit lock that comes into operation when the lid is closed. The size of this rare and quality example is 64 mm square by 22 mm deep. A similar example can be found at the Winsconsin Historical Museum.
