This is a nice open face compass made by the famous ROSS LTD., instrument maker since early 1800s (click here for a good chronology of this company). It comes in a solid silver case in excellent condition free of dings or dents. The case was made by A. T. O. (Albert Thomas Oliver). Located at Wynyatt Street, Clerkenwell, London EC, this company was well known as watch case maker in early 1900s. The case is hallmarked for London 1905. It is also stamped with maker's initials A. T. O.. The ring is also stamped with a Lion Passant. The dial has a nice design and is signed ROSS LONDON. The compass has a bar needle with jewelled brass cap. It finds North easily and precisely. The needle can be locked (for transit) by turning the crown under the ring. The glass crystal is excellent condition without scratches or chips. It measures 42.5 mm in diameter excluding the pendant and the ring. This is a rare compass by a quality maker.
