Code BA13051684: Sterling Silver Hunter Compass by C. W. DIXEY, Hallmarked London 1849
This is a rare English full hunter compass that comes in a sterling silver case fully hallmarked for London 1849. The are several hallmarks on the case: The Pendant is hallmarked with a Lion Passant and the letter O. Inside the front lid it is hallmarked with the maker's initials I D (John Dyer), a Lion Passant and the letter O. The rim of the compass and the ring bear a Lion Passant as well. The case is engine turned and is virtually in mint condition. It has a strong hinge and the lid springs open when the push button is pressed. It has an empty disc at the centre, ready to be engraved. The dial is made of white porcelain and still in mint condition without any damage. It is signed C. W. DIXEY BOND STREET. The quality bar needle has a jewelled brass cap and finds North precisely. When the lid is closed a transit lock freezes the needle to avoid undue wear to the pivot. The dial is covered with a glass crystal still in mint condition without chips or scratches. The diameter of the case is about 34 mm excluding the pendant and the ring. |
