The Boreal Arrow

Code BA13012572: Antique Compendium by Dollond London, c. 1880

This is a rare compendium made by the famous Dollond of London. These instruments were favored amongst travelers, explorers and balloonists during their journeys. This particular set is absolutely in wonderful original condition. It contains three instruments: a compass, a barometer and a thermometer. I would place its manufacture date to around 1880. It comes in an oval leather case in excellent condition with working push button and strong hinges. The lid closes firmly as it should. The blue-purple linen inside the lid is virtually in mint condition, which is very uncommon for an instrument of this age.

The blue-purple velvet at the base is also in mint condition. There is no loss of leather to the case or any kind of damage. The case is engraved with golden initials: G. H.. Inside the lid it is marked with golden letters:

DOLLOND & Co.

5

NORTHUMBERLAND AVENUE

CHARING CROSS

LONDON

This instrument was preserved in its original mint condition after all these years.

The compass:

The compass has a gilt metal case in excellent condition without dings or dents. It has a mother-of-pearl Singer's Patent dial also in excellent condition (virtually new). The dial can be locked/released by turning the crown clockwise/counter-clockwise under the loop. The beveled glass crystal is in excellent condition without scratches or chips. The compass is in full working order and points North easily and precisely. Measures 51mm in diameter (excluding the pendant and the bow) and has 15mm thickness.

The barometer:

The barometer is also in excellent condition. It also comes in a gilt metal case with a rotating bezel that can be rotated by turning the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise. The bezel can be used as an altimeter function. The dial is numbered in inches of mercury (from 23 to 31) and in feet (from 0 to 8000). It is marked Compensated and gives indication to weather changes ( RAIN, CHANGE, FAIR). It is marked "Compensated" at the center and clearly signed Dollond, London with serial number 8002.  The dial is in excellent condition. The barometer is in full working order and has been tested with an air bag. Measures 51mm in diameter (excluding the pendant and the bow) and has 17mm thickness.

The thermometer:

The thermometer is lodged in the base between the compass and the barometer. It is set in ivory and in full working order. It has two scales of temperatures: in Celsius and Fahrenheit.

This is a nice quality pocket combination set is considered as extremely rare especially in this hard to find condition.
