This a rare WW1 English military compass. Engraved R. J. HOPGOOD & Co. LONDON E. C., MK VI with serial number 3567, date 1918 and military arrow /|\.  Only few compasses were made by this maker, and they are very difficult to find. The low serial is an indication of the rarity of the piece. The case is Nickel and in excellent condition, without dings or dents. Strong hinge. The Dennison dial and glass are in excellent condition without scratches or chips.  In full working order, finding North without any problem, with strong hinge including the transit lock. Nice gift idea. Size 4.7cm diameter.

The case maker was Aaron Lufkin Dennison of Birmingham UK, he manufactured watch cases from late 1874 at 24 Villa Road, Handsworth UK. As part of the war effort he diversified into compass cases. He was originally the Managing Director of the American Waltham Watch Company in the USA, where he made the very first watch with interchangeable parts and produced watches of Railway quality. He was known as the Founding Father of the American Watch Making Industry.
