The Boreal Arrow

Code BA11042830: Dollond c. 1920 English Hunter Engraved Compass

This an extremely rare  hunter compass made around 1920 by Dollond, London. The case is brass and in nice condition for its age without dings or dents. It has a strong hinge and the lid springs open when the button is pushed. It has an attractive black bezel with a beveled glass crystal all in excellent condition without any chips or scratches. It has a very nice Dennison dial. It is in full working order and pointing North very precisely. When the lid is closed the transit lock prevents the needle from moving to avoid wear to the pivot. This is a rare example by a famous maker. It measures around 46mm in diameter.

The case maker was Aaron Lufkin Dennison of Birmingham UK, he manufactured watch cases from late 1874 at 24 Villa Road, Handsworth UK. As part of the war effort he diversified into compass cases. He was originally the Managing Director of the American Waltham Watch Company in the USA, where he made the very first watch with interchangeable parts and produced watches of Railway quality. He was known as the Founding Father of the American Watch Making Industry.
