The Boreal Arrow 


This is a vintage 18 size WALTHAM pocket watch dating from 1869, with coin silver full hunter case in full working order and keeping time. The case is four-hinged hunter all in very good condition with some light dings due to age and use.  All hinges are strong and when the button is pushed the front lid springs open to a 45 degrees. Inside front lid engraved AM WATCH CO WALTHAM MASS, WARRANTED COIN SILVER with serial number *S389. The serial number is also engraved inside the back cover. Around the inscription it has very nice decoration.  Inside dust cover engraved with serial number *S389 and the digit 3 preceded with a star *.  All lids open and close as they should. The face is white with black Roman numerals marking the hour. An inside center dial exists with black numbers marked in increments of 10 up to 60. The dial is in wonderful condition as can be seen in the picture. The glass crystal is in excellent condition too without any scratches or chips. The original Waltham blue hands are in excellent condition. The movement is very clean. Key wind and set, it is engraved with a private label H. H. Bowles. It is the signature of the Cherryfield, Maine jeweler HH Bowles. Henry Haviland Bowles (born Columbia, Maine 1841), was also a Civil War musician, having served with the 6th Maine regiment from 1861 to 1864. He saw action at many notable (weren't they all!) battles including Yorktown,Williamsburg, Garnett's Farm, White Oak Bridge, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Rappahannock Station,Wilderness and Spottsylvania Court House. Serial number is 411960, which dates this watch to 1869. It is also marked Fogg's Patent, Cherryfield, Maine. Inside it is engraved with Fogg's Patent date 14 Feb. 1865. It is running strong and keeps time. It comes with a winding key.
