The Boreal Arrow

Code BA384: English Sundial J. LIZARS Compass

This is an extremely rare example of a sundial hunter compass. It is marked J. LIZARS GLASGOW LONDON ETC but was probably made by the famous BARKER & S compass maker. It is also marked with a serial number 396957. I would date this compass to around 1900. The case has a nice old patina and a strong hinge. It has no dings or dents. Only some scratches due to age. Upon a push on the button, the front lid springs open to reveal a nice compass with a gnomon that unfolds and can be adjusted from 10o to 90o. It clicks when closed. The compass has a silver chapter ring and dial. It has Roman numerals divided to 15 minutes intervals. It is very precise and points North. The transit lock is also in perfect working order when lid is closed. The compass measures 51mm in diameter.
