This is a WW1 military compass with Nickel case engraved Dennison Birmingham VI, 47741,1917. It has the military arrow /|\. Inside the lid, it is stamped 154479 M. The case is still in excellent condition without dings or dents. When the push button is pushed, the lid springs open as it should. The thick bevelled glass crystal is in excellent condition without any chips or scatches. The compass has a typical Dennison dial in excellent condition. Next to the glass stamped the last four digits of the inner serial number (4479). In full working order and finding North precisely, with strong hinge including the transit lock. It measures around 4.7cm in diameter.

The case maker was Aaron Lufkin Dennison of Birmingham UK, he manufactured watch cases from late 1874 at 24 Villa Road, Handsworth UK. As part of the war effort he diversified into compass cases. He was originally the Managing Director of the American Waltham Watch Company in the USA, where he made the very first watch with interchangeable parts and produced watches of Railway quality. He was known as the Founding Father of the American Watch Making Industry.
