Code BA19030301: Short and Mason LTD London Engraved Compass, 1916

This is a nice WW1 officers pocket watch style antique compass, engraved on front lid: Short & Mason LTD, London, 1916, V 112287 and military arrow. The case is made by the famous Dennison Watch Case Company of Birmingham (marked inside the back lid). It is Nickel and in excellent condition without dings or dents. The beveled glass crystal covers the distinctive Singers patent style dial card both in excellent condition. In full working order and finds North easily. The transit lock is also in working order when lid is closed. Lid springs open when the button is pushed. Meausres 4.7cm in diameter. A rare and nice compass by a quality maker.

The case maker was Aaron Lufkin Dennison of Birmingham UK, he manufactured watch cases from late 1874 at 24 Villa Road, Handsworth UK. As part of the war effort he diversified into compass cases. He was originally the Managing Director of the American Waltham Watch Company in the USA, where he made the very first watch with interchangeable parts and produced watches of Railway quality. He was known as the Founding Father of the American Watch Making Industry.
