This is a Georgian leather-cased compass made in England by W&S Jones in 1808. It is called a long-neck compass. The compass case is in excellent condition. It is solid silver at bears English Silver Hallmarks for London 1808.The dial is made of porcelain and is in excellent condition. It has a nice design typically used in the early 1800s. It is signed W & S JONES, HOLBORN LONDON. The wooden Moroccan leather covered case is in excellent condition without any kind of damage with strong hinge and functional hook to securely close the case. The compass has a quality jeweled brass cap with a bar needle. It is in excellent working order and finding North very easily. Under the long neck there is a small lever acting as a transit lock, lifting the brass disc located under pivot to avoid any contact with the pin. The compass still has its original slightly convex glass crystal, which is in excellent condition without any scratches or chips. The length from bottom to the bow is 65.65mm. The diameter of the dial is 46mm. The diameter of the leather case is 56mm. This is to be considered as an extremely rare Georgian Long-Neck compass and has great value for the serious collector.
