This is a nice WWI era compass, engraved H. HUGHES & SON LTD. 59 FENCHURCH ST LONDON made around 1917. It has a Dennison case stamped 130169 M inside the front lid. The case is Nickel plated and virtually in mint condition. When the button is pushed the front lid springs open as it should. Beveled glass crystal and dry Dennison dial card are in excellent condition. Next to the glass stamped the last four digits of the inner serial number (0169). In full working order and finding North precisely, with strong hinge including the transit lock. This engraved compass would make a great gift. Size 4.7cm diameter.
The case maker was Aaron Lufkin Dennison of Birmingham UK, he manufactured watch cases from late 1874 at 24 Villa Road, Handsworth UK. As part of the war effort he diversified into compass cases. He was originally the Managing Director of the American Waltham Watch Company in the USA, where he made the very first watch with interchangeable parts and produced watches of Railway quality. He was known as the Founding Father of the American Watch Making Industry.
