Code BA12101769: Solid Silver Hunter Cased Compass, 1887
This is an unusual and rare compass made by Fanny Benjamin in 1887. The case is made of solid silver and has several silver hallmarks: The maker's initials are F.B., which correspond to Fanny Benjamin ( http://www.silvercollection.it/ENGLISHSILVERMARKSXF.html#58ING/. The lion mark indicates that it is Sterling Silver. It has a tight bow also marked with the lion mark. The letter M corresponds to the year 1887. It is also marked with digit 5. The case is in excellent condition with normal signs of use. No damage. When the button is pushed the front lid springs open and does not travel beyond the right angle. Beveled glass crystal is in excellent condition. The compass has a two-tone dial: yellow and white. The lower dial is yellow and marked with cardinal points. It is in perfect condition. There is also a lifted chapter ring, level with the needle, and graduated every five degrees and numbered every 10 degrees. The quality bar needle has a jeweled brass cap. In full working order and finding North precisely, with strong hinge including the transit lock. Size 37mm in diameter excluding the ring. High quality, very rare compass and hard to find in such a condition.
