The Boreal Arrow
Code BA12011364: F. Barker & Son Compass in Wood Box c. 1890 for Keuffel & Esser NY
This is a rare and nice English compass in wood case dating from late 1800s made by the famous English compass maker Francis Barker & Son for Keuffel & Esser Co. in New York. The case is very well made and still in excellent condition without any damage with strong hinges and two hooks fully functional to secure the lid when closed. It is engraved MADE IN ENGLAND. The brass hinges are hidden as it was the case to most wood compasses made by F. Barker & Son. The dial is very nicely detailed, a typical F. Barker dial. It is signed with maker's logo: TRADE MARK LONDON, and also carries the signature of KEUFFEL & ESSER NY. It has a flat glass crystal that covers the dial. The crystal is in excellent condition without chips or scratches. It has a transit lock when the lid is closed. Very fine and quality example. The compass is in working order and finds North easily. It measures 77 mm x 77 mm x 28 mm. It would make a great gift.
